DIY Painted Star Quilt Blocks With FREE SVG Cut File

This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience. If you make a purchase through one of my links I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

I love projects that will use up some of my scrap wood and add to my Farmhouse Decor.  These painted quilt blocks fit the bill perfectly.  Plus they are quick and easy to make!

I already did the most difficult part, creating the stencils.  And I’m sharing the SVG cut file with you so all you need to do is have fun painting.  I’ve even included the png files in case you want to cut the stencils by hand.

So let’s get to it.

  • Four Square Pieces of Wood (I used 1×6)
  • Paint (I love SeaPaint)
  • Oracle 813 Stencil Vinyl
  • Transfer or Clear Contact Paper
  • A way to cut your Stencil (I use a Cricut Explore)
  • Barn Star Quilt Blocks Stencil SVG File (available in my FREE Resource Library -you can get access at the bottom of this post)

How To Make Painted Star Quilt Blocks

I made the stencils 5 1/2″ by 5 1/2″ which is perfect for a 1×6 or 2×6 board.  Six inch wide boards are actually 5 1/2″ wide.  However,  you can resize the stencil in your design software if you want to use a smaller or bigger board.

So start with your wood and cut 4 square pieces.  Sand the wood and then remove any dust.

I painted the base of my blocks Driftwood by SeaPaint.  It’s a nice dark grey color.  One of the things I love about this paint is it will be dry and ready to go as soon as our stencils are cut.

Uploading the Stencils

The stencils are in my free resource library under SVG files.  You can request the password to the library at the bottom of this post.  After you download and unzip the files upload each SVG into your design software.

The stencil part is already done for you, you just need to upload and go.  And if you leave them at 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ they will all fit on one cut mat.

After you have them arranged to cut, be sure to select all of them and hit that attach button down on the bottom right.  Otherwise they will go to your cut mat in a jumbled mess.

I cut all of my stencils with Oracle 813 Stencil Vinyl which you can order for a pretty good price here.

Transferring the Quilt Block Stencils

After your stencils are cut, you will need to weed them.  Here is a picture of how I weeded mine.  You will have some options with the two stencils that have the squares in the center.  So you can change the look depending on which pieces you weed out.

Next apply your transfer paper and rub it down really good so your vinyl will stick to it.  I kept all the stencils together for this part because it seemed easier.   After the transfer paper is on you can cut the stencils apart.

Once you have the stencils cut apart remove the backing and line them up on your pieces of wood.  Since the stencils are the same size as your block of wood, they will be super easy to line up.

Use your Cricut scraper or card to burnish (rub really hard) the stencil on the wood.  And then remove the transfer paper.

Painting With The Stencils

The reason I like to use Oracle 813 Stencil vinyl is that it conforms to the wood so well and helps prevent bleeds.  However we are in the home stretch and I don’t want to ruin a project when we’ve come this far.  So I always add a little extra assurance.

I like to seal the stencil by either painting over it with my base coat of paint, or adding a layer of mod podge.  Both methods will help seal the stencil, so when we paint the final color it will not bleed.

After the seal is dry go ahead and paint the design in your choice of colors.  I chose to do all one color and used Navy Sailor by SeaPaint.

And when your final coat of paint is dry, peel off your stencils.  Be sure to pull the stencils up against the grain of the wood to prevent your base coat of paint from peeling.  For more details plus tips and tricks on painting a perfect wood sign see this post.

You can stop there if you like and go ahead and seal your blocks with your choice of sealer.  But I like to add a little distressing.

SeaPaint Secrets makes this super easy to do.  I used Salty Secret to get this look.   All you have to do is take a dry chippy paint brush dip just the tip of the brush into the secrets paint.  Dab off the excess paint onto another surface.  Then drag your brush lightly across the board from one end to the other.

I have a full tutorial on how to use SeaPaint and Secrets to stain, distress and weather wood in just minutes that you can find here.

I love the effect it gives to painted signs.

After you’re done painting be sure to seal your blocks, I used Satin Seal by SeaPaints.   And I added sawtooth hangers to the back so I can hang them up.  You can also set them directly on a shelf.

Either way, it’s a fun idea to use up scrap wood and a perfect compliment to farmhouse decor.  Happy painting!

I made all four of these as SVG cut files that you can upload to your cutting machines.  PNG images are also included if you would like to cut them by hand.  The stencil part is already done, so you just have to upload them and you are ready to go.  They will even all fit on one cutting mat if you keep them at the 5 1/2″ size.

I keep all of my files, plans and printable in my FREE Resource Library that I created for subscribers to my newsletter.  Simply fill out the form below for the password.

Yes it’s there. They are in alphabetical order, in the B’s for Barn start quilt. I’ll make a note to add it to the Q section as well
