DIY Leather Shamrock Earrings Supplies Needed
- Cricut Faux Leather
- Earring Hooks
- Jump Rings
- Jewelry Pliers
- Cricut Explore or Maker Cutting Machine
- Free Shamrock SVG File (located in my free resource library – more details at the bottom of the post)
So I grabbed this variety pack of faux leather by Cricut for a great price on Amazon. There’s enough here to make all kinds of fun earrings and crafts so I’m super happy with that purchase.
The best thing about it is you can use your fine point blade that came with most Cricut machines, so no need to buy a deep cut blade. Also as long as your standard green mat is still relatively sticky you can use that as well. However, the purple strong grip mat is recommended.
You’ll also need to grab some fish hook earring hooks.
And while I was on Amazon I found this great jump ring set that includes pliers and tweezers for a super price. Yes please!
How To Cut Faux Leather With Cricut
After you grab the SVG file upload it to design space. If you need help with uploading and downloading SVG files you can find it here.
The file is ready to go once it’s uploaded unless you want to adjust the size.
Before you cut the faux leather set the cut dial on your Cricut to custom. And then from the menu on the screen choose Faux Leather (paper thin).
And you can see the instructions under the material tells us to turn mirror on. You’ll find that on the left side of the screen right under your mat picture.
And we’re going to put the shiny, or colored side down on our mat to cut it.
Now, I’m not sure how important those instructions are because the first two times I cut the leather I didn’t mirror and I had the colored side up. Oooops.
However I’m sure it’s to help keep our mats clean, so it’s best to follow Cricuts instructions. (Which I have done since then)
After you have the leather on the mat go ahead and load it and push the start button. My Cricut Explore did a great job of cutting the faux leather. I didn’t have any stuck pieces at all!
Putting Together the Faux Leather Earrings
After everything is cut unload your mat and remove the earrings. Remember it’s best to flip the mat over and remove the mat from your earrings to reduce curl.
Now we get to use the fun earring tools. I’m super happy I got the jump rings with pliers and tweezers because I don’t think I could have made these without them!
The jump rings are small and it’s much easier to hold them with the pliers or tweezers to loop on the leather earring pieces.
So grab a jump ring with your pliers and open it up so that we can put the shamrocks on. Start with the full shamrock.
Put one end of the jump ring through the hole that is cut out on the full shamrock. After you get that one on grab the outline shamrock and put it on the jump ring over the full one.
Next grab the fish hook earring hooks and loop that onto the jump ring also.
Finally, grab the pliers and squeeze the ends of the jump ring back together.
Repeat the same process for the second earring. And you’re done! It’s really that easy.
Can Cricut Cut Real Leather?
Cutting sheets of faux leather is easy enough, so the question is -can a Cricut cut sheets of real leather?
I bought a sheet of Cricut brand metallic leather to try it out with my Cricut Explore.
You will need to get a deep cut blade to cut the real leather or if you have the Cricut Maker you can use the knife blade. Set the materials dial to custom and choose metalic leather as the material.
So I used the deep cut blade with my explore and it did pretty good with this leather. There were a couple of spots that did not cut all of the way through and I needed to snip with my scissors. But it didn’t compromise the design at all.
I used this leather to cut heart shape earrings. And the small hole that is needed to put the jump ring through was too small for this thicker material. So I would keep that in mind if you are looking to make intricate cuts with the real leather.
