Tell me I’m not the only one. Five minutes after being sent to clean their room my kids run out and shout DONE! I go check. It looks like the only thing they accomplished was tossing a few dirty clothes in the vicinity of the clothes hamper.
I give them three things they need to do, “make your bed, throw away all this trash, get the dirty clothes into the hamper”. We repeat this process over and over.
So I came up with a solution.

Dry Erase Clean Bedroom Checklist
I made them a checklist. And not just any checklist. One that hangs behind their door and is dry erase. Because let’s face it if I have to print this sheet every time they need to clean their room it won’t happen.
So now it’s a permanent visual guide for all the things they need to do before they utter the words “My room’s clean mom!” I even tied and taped the dry erase marker to it so it doesn’t get lost in the sea of things.

- Clip Board or Binder Clips
- Page Protector
- Dry Erase Marker
- String and Tape
- Hammer and nail
What To Do
Print off the checklist and place it in a page protector. I planned to put our checklist on a clipboard, but alas I couldn’t find the clipboard in their room. So I used a binder clip which works just as well.
Take a string (about 20″ long) and knot one end around your clipboard or binder clip. Tie the other end of the string around your dry erase marker. Tape it down so it doesn’t slip off.
Hammer a nail (preferably into a stud) behind their bedroom door at a level that your kids can reach. Hang the checklist on the nail.
When your kids complete a task they can check it off with the marker. When they are all done you can wipe their checkmarks off with a paper towel so you’re ready for the next day.
Easy Peasy.
How well does it work
Well like everything with kids, they need to be trained to use it.
At the first exclamation of “My Room’s clean mom!” I ask if they completed the checklist. They run back. At the second shout of a clean room, I ask if they are sure they did everything on the checklist. Sometimes they will go back again, other times they insist yes.
Then I go back and grab the checklist and go over each item. I point out things they did well, and some things they need to work on. Generally, I have to give them one or two more things to complete before I declare it clean.
Like anything, the more kids do it, the better they will get at it. Plan on spending the first weeks training them to go off of the list.
